What is methadone and how does it work?
- Opioid dependency is characterized by an individual's inability to stop using opiates even when objectively it is in his or her best interest to stop. There is usually a strong desire to take the drug, difficulties in controlling the drug using behavior, withdrawal symptoms become present when the individual stops taking or reduces the amount of the drug, evidence of tolerance, increased amount of time consumed with the drug taking, and persistant use after negative consequences.
What is methadone and how does it work?
- Methadone is a long- acting prescription medication used in the maintenance treatment of drug addiction. Once a proper therapuetic dose is determined, cravings and withdrawals stop without creating the effects of euphoria or sedation.
